AI Tarot Reader

“AI Tarot” is an interactive artwork centered around the character of a young AI named Mremlyn, who is embarking on a career as a fortune teller. Harnessing the power of her deep neural networks, Mremlyn ingests heart rate data from her patrons and spins elaborate tales of human folklore in answer to their most pressing life questions. She invites her seekers to place their finger on a heart-rate monitor and then takes them through a guided meditation. As the seeker breathes in and out, following the rhythm of the meditation, Mremlyn examines their autonomic nervous system, through the lens…

Halos Of Air

Halos Of Air 2021 Laura Jade & Leslie Marsh Exhibitions 2022 Bondi Pavilion Gallery, Sydney 2021 Coal Loader, Centre for Sustainability, Sydney “All living creatures need a home, even those that seek shelter in the winding burrows of our pulmonary system. Coal dust has long been a catalyst for the colonisation of our airways by myriad organisms, but so have many seemingly disparate sites, including, we now realise, fish markets. This work draws on the artist’s own experience in 2020 of sharing her breath with a microscopic organism that gradually and then quickly grew its family inside her –…

Pocket Cosmos

Exhibition: Curiocity Festival 2021 Location: City Botanical Gardens, Brisbane Dates: 12th-28th March 2021 Collaborators: Cave Urban, Laura Jade & Leslie Marsh Pocket Cosmos combines the work of Cave Urban and artists Laura Jade and Leslie Marsh to create a new visual and sensorial experience where visitors can learn about the mathematics and optical science of kaleidoscopes. An intriguing Alang Alang woven obelisk standing in a park or city square offers an amazing scene to all those who enter its intimate confines — a personal view of infinity in the form of an ever-changing mosaic of light, colour, and movement. Even…

B A P T I S M

EXCHANGE – BACHLUTHER is an Australian/German audiovisual art project created for the 500th anniversary of the reformation / the Luther anniversary year 2017. For thousands of years water has played an important role in religious symbolism. Used for cleansing and purification, water often represents life itself. In Baptism, we participate in an eternal offering that has no beginning or end, a virtue of faith that is infinite. Like the Son, The Father and the Holy Spirit, water has it’s own trio of mysterious properties. It can be ice, liquid or mist. Its crystalline structure allows it to take on beautiful patterned…

MICRO PLANET

Micro Planet is an ongoing exploration into the micro-macrocosm of the natural world. Looking inwards through the lens you are transported to the microscopic scale of nature. When looking through the microscope one starts to imagine alien worlds and planets.  It appears mysterious, strange and cosmic in a similar way to looking outwards through a telescope. Our ability to transcend our human vision through these inventions has allowed us to step outside of the anthropocentric idea of scale, challenging our inherent feeling of being “normal sized”. Instead we find  that we are on a scale that stretches seemingly infinity in both directions,…

BRAINLIGHT

L U X   M E N T I S  –  Light Of The Mind B R A I N L I G H T  2015 integrates biology and illumination design into an interactive, sculpture cut from perspex and engraved with neural networks. Collaborating with neuroscientist Peter Simpson-Young and programmers Sam Gentle & Sami Sabik, the brain sculpture lights up in response to changing brain activity transmitted from an EEG (electroencephalography) wireless headset. The B R A I N L I G H T  was Laura’s major research project for her Masters of Illumination Design at the University of Technology, Sydney and was created…

CEREBRAL NEBULA

Cerebral Nebula (Brain Light) is a life size human brain sculpture created using an MRI scan of a 35 year old male, and then sliced into cross sections, laser cut in perspex and then hand etched, slice by slice, with neural networks. Cerebral Nebula (Brain Light) is the prototype model for the Brain Light Project, a large brain installation that is activated and illuminated by human brainwaves transmitted from a wireless EEG headset. Neuroscience and Art are fascinating fields; both explore the frontiers of human consciousness in parallel ways. As an artist with a background in biology I am drawn to…

CEREBRAL ORB

CEREBRAL ORB The first stage of the Brain Light research project was creating an interface to provide an interactive art experience where no physical touch was required except the power of thoughts.  The interactive installation is controlled with a wireless headset that records the brain’s electrical activity and produces a shifting coloured orb of light driven by brain activity. Collaborating with a neuroscientist, Peter Simpson-Young Research Officer, MDA Australia and software developer and programmer Sam Gentle, the headset has been set to explore three brain frequencies: alpha (Blue, meditation), theta (Green, focus and attention) and beta (Red, excitement/agitation). These are translated into a…

THE PSYCHO-ECOLOGY OF ENERGETIC CURSES

Lokrum island. A biodiversity reservation with a history rich in legends. Dubrovnik, Croatia Mysterious Worlds of Science Underground Exhibition Lazareti Gallery in Dubrovnik 22 – 27 July 2016 PSYCHO-ECOLOGY OF ENERGETIC CURSES- soundscape. The Psycho-Ecology of Energetic Curses installation was the outcome of my experimental exploration of the history, in particular the curse, of Lokrum Island, located near the city of Dubrovnik in Croatia. The work was created during the final day of a 10 day Science Underground Academy residency organised by the UR Institute and hosted in the in the Natural History Museum, Dubrovnik, Croatia. I was interested in experimenting with ways of storytelling and passing on myths through sensory…

DEEP WATER AURORA

A light and dance performance collaboration between a Canadian dancer Lydia Zimmer, an Australian photographer and artist Georgina Campbell and lighting artist Laura Jade. The work was created during an artist in residence program at NES Studios in Skagastrond, Iceland. Laura Jade experimented with phosphorescent powder and light on Lydia’s hands. Lydia’s improvised dance and movement vocabulary  explored the light to create an embodied experience of the aurora borealis. Filmed by Georgina Campbell. Edited and soundscape created by Laura Jade.  …

Anomalies (Of Random Intelligent Design)

(   Anomalies (Of Random Intelligent Design) is a series of assemblage sculptures created out of found pieces of bone, limbs, exoskeleton and shell collected on a beach in Skagastrond, Iceland, one day during an artist Residency at NES studios. The work explores a humorous approach to thinking about our hand in “intelligent” evolution, the possibilities and failings of genetic manipulation and our way of modifying nature to become anthropomorphic or human centric. Like a puzzle, the same building blocks create a multitude of possible designs.  Nature’s randomness expressed in bone debris found on a single beach, a metaphor for the external pressures of the environment. The pieces are recombined and balanced with different outcomes, similar…

NANO SCIENCE CONCEPT DESIGNS

Nano Vision Nano Vision is a wall of 3D hexagonal shapes lazer cut out out of white perspex. This white first layer will stick out from the wall approx. 1 meter. Within the view finder you will be able to see through the hexagon holes like “tunnels” which contain illuminated moving nano structures. This will be achieved through the use of programmed LEDS. The shifting programmed light of the LEDs will illuminate through the layers creating movement as if the molecular structure is assembling itself. This artwork will illustrate the structure “appearance” of layers of nano structures and highlight it’s materiality and “essence” through…

ICHTHYO

In 2013 I worked as a biological illustrator for an Icthyologist, Dr Anthony Gill at the University of Sydney. I created the images for a taxonomic paper he was working on comparing the gill arches across species of small sea fish. The illustrations were drawn through a periscope microscope, very carefully tracing the tiny bone structures of fish that are made translucent with a special pink dye. Traditionally, this has been one of the functional realms of art within science, creating clear illustrations for scientific papers. I was interested to work at this traditional cross section between art and science. These designs I…
